Medicine Abuse

“The Taxicabs were drivin’ me around, To the handshake drugs I bought downtown.” - Handshake Drugs by Wilco

It’s well known I believe, that many people, including kids, abuse medicine. Drugs that, as the catchy Wilco song implies, are received with a friendly handshake over the pharmaceutical counter. Well not so friendly if you live in my area. Customer service is non-existent here, but that’s beside the point.
The point is, if I knew about these types of abuses, why was I so shocked to find out that you now need to show your I.D. to purchase cough syrup?
That’s right, we all have a really nasty cold around here and I went to buy Toddler’s Cough and Stuffy Nose Dimetapp for the kiddos and was required to show my I.D.

Is it sickening to anyone else what people will use to give themselves a buzz or… whatever they do with cough medicine? Heaven knows I can’t even imagine what they’ve been doing with it to put an age restriction on purchases.
So, just so you get what I’m saying, it’s not having to show I.D. that’s upsetting to me, it’s that enough people were abusing cough medicine that the law had to be written in the first place. Yikes!

Things like this make me all the more concerned for how my children grow up and what becomes important to them in life. I’ve seen the effects of addiction to drugs and smoking and, I just pray they don’t choose that path someday.

It’s more than a little disturbing, isn’t it?

I know that they’ve moved a lot of over-the-counter drugs behind the prescription counter now so you can only buy them when a pharmacist is on duty (frustrating if you need it when they’re not!) - I haven’t been asked for ID but somehow it doesn’t surprise me that they’re moving to that. You’re right, it’s so upsetting that these measures are necessary these days. It’s a scary world out there.

I imagine this is how our parents felt when they started having to show id to buy spray paint. And just so you know, you also have to show id to buy liquid Cascade now. At least in Texas. I knew that it and Sudafed were used to make meth, but I heard recently that now kids are extracting the stuff from Robitussin (dextro-something) and abusing it.

Oh my goodness Jeana, I had no idea about the liquid cascade. How sad.

Yep, they are using the cough syrup to make meth, they are even writing down who bought it and how much you bought here in Minnesota. But we had no problems buying NyQuil for adults, just the kids stuff. Weird, huh?
My husband needed ID for baby meds, the whole bottle being about 2 TBL, but our 17yo could go buy NyQuil. Doesn’t make sense.
I know we have liquid cascade on the shelves, but I’ll be watching for that change, too. Weird.

It is scary. I also hope my kids will make the right choices. I’m doing the best I can to let them know the dangers of drugs but that’s not always enough. That’s what scares me the most.

Yeah, I heard it was because of the whole meth thing.

    Really, really sad :-(
