Cowabunga!!
I’ve decided I may have to change Obi-Wan’s screen name. He’s on a new super hero kick. He’s begun stuffing his two toy light sabers down the back of his shirt in Leonardro like fashion and now runs around the house shouting,
“I a enjin tortol!!!”
Translation: I’m a Ninja Turtle
That’s right, my 5 and 4 year old are now into Ninja Turtles. *gasp*
Whose fault is that? Mine, of course!
I simply couldn’t resist. I heard that the original series was on DVD and my fond memories of watching the show after school every day overtook me. I found my hand placing the DVD in my netflix queue. Then I anxiously awaited it’s arrival.
That’s right, me. But once it got here, I decided I couldn’t just watch it by myself. So I let the boys watch the first episode and they were hooked. Just like I had been.
I was amazed to realize that not only had I seen every episode from season 1, I remembered nearly every detail. The campy jokes, the cheesy music, and I laughed and loved it as much as I did as a kid.
Oh, and I have another confession to make. I love the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Trilogy too. And when the boys are just a tad bit older I can’t wait to show it to them.
I’ve often seen things I loved as a kid, through these now adult eyes and realized just how cheesy and silly they are, and yet that magic that was created as I saw them through my childhood eyes, forever instills them, as totally cool!
Other shows I loved: Transformers, G. I. Joes, Rainbow Brite, Strawberry Shortcake, My Little Ponies, Care Bears, Smurfs. (can you say, too much TV?)
What were your favorite childhood shows and do you like them still?

I watched waaaay too much TV as a kid. Your list pales in comparison to mine. Mwahahahah! I watched everything on your list, plus a few dozen others.
p.s. We’ve got the first two seasons of The Muppet Show on DVD. So neener neener neener.
Oh I loved the Muppet Show. That reminds me of Fraggle Rock. I need to see that one again. I’m just remembering some other shows I watched. I remember watching Gummy Bears, Glo-Worms, Pixie Tails, Potato Heads and Lady Lovely Locks, too.
Rainbow Brite was my absolute favorite cartoon when I was a little girl, but I also liked all the ones on your list plus: Thundercats, the Snorks, Glo Friends, He-man and She-ra (I used to pretend I had a horse that was a cross between Starlight from Rainbow Brite and She-ra’s horse), Jem, Ghostbusters, Muppet babies, Poochie, Popples, Rescue Rangers, DuckTales, DarkwingDuck, Fragglerock, Pound Puppies, The Legend of Zelda (Excuuuuuse me, Princess!), Smurfs, Super Mario Brothers, The Wuzzles, and Voltron (The 80’s power rangers-like anime). Ha ha, I recently looked up some of these cartoons on youtube, and they are hilarious. Transformers and Jem have such stupid storylines and voices, and so many of them are so serious. Usually going something like this: This is the story of “So and So”, the sole defender of the ENTIRE UNIVERSE against the evil “So and So” (and their often comically bumbling sidekick.)
Josie and the Pussycats…even had the underoos. LOVED THEM! Hmmm, I wonder what ever happened to them.
Hi! I saw you on Cheryl’s blog and thought yours was so fun!
I am a filmmaker/photographer (well, was before I was a full-time Mom!) so you can only imagine the shows I used to watch! I used to love Ducktales and Gummy Bears, Animaniacs all through High School (Can’t wait to show those to my kids when they’re a little older!) GI Joe, Thundercats, etc etc. And of course, He-Man, which brings me to a similar experience with my son. We bought him a He-Man DVD thinking the same thing you did, and sat down to watch it and was dissappointed! It wasn’t as cool as I remembered. But my Son Loved it! So, who cares! The best part of being a parents is defintely reliving your childhood, even when you find out it wasn’t as cool as you thought! =)
Oooo, I don’t know how I forgot about He-Man and She-ra!
And I totally remember the Popples! I use to have a bunch of popples. I thought they were the coolest thing, being able to fold up in side a little pouch. HA!
I totally loved Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles too–Donatello was my favorite. (Yes, I’m a loser.) But She-ra, Fraggle Rock, and JEM were way high on the list. And Smurfs. And Care Bears. And Rainbow Brite. And Gummy Bears (bouncing here and there and everywhere!). Yikes, too much TV for me too.
I loved The G Force when I was in first grade. Hardly anyone else remembers it.
I have been talking about Jem a lot lately. I loved the Smurfs and had quite the collection of figurines. It is weird how so much of this stuff is coming back. My daughter loves Strawberry Shortcake and has 2 Cabbage Patch Kids and a Care Bear. I am waiting to see what reappears next.
I collected Smurf dolls, need I say more?
I love Ninjia Turtles too. I think it’s cool. And He-man, too! My son has a turtle toy (thanks to McDo).
Oh my, trying to remember… I was in high school by the time a lot of those came out, so didn’t watch many. I did like Thundercats and He-Man and She-Ra. My favorite Saturday morning shows when I was a kid were Dungeons & Dragons and Pole Position though, if anyone remembers those!
Oh I totally loved Ninja Turtles. Sad, but true. Also the Smurfs.
