Medicine Abuse

“The Taxicabs were drivin’ me around, To the handshake drugs I bought downtown.” - Handshake Drugs by Wilco

It’s well known I believe, that many people, including kids, abuse medicine. Drugs that, as the catchy Wilco song implies, are received with a friendly handshake over the pharmaceutical counter. Well not so friendly if you live in my area. Customer service is non-existent here, but that’s beside the point.
The point is, if I knew about these types of abuses, why was I so shocked to find out that you now need to show your I.D. to purchase cough syrup?
That’s right, we all have a really nasty cold around here and I went to buy Toddler’s Cough and Stuffy Nose Dimetapp for the kiddos and was required to show my I.D.

Is it sickening to anyone else what people will use to give themselves a buzz or… whatever they do with cough medicine? Heaven knows I can’t even imagine what they’ve been doing with it to put an age restriction on purchases.
So, just so you get what I’m saying, it’s not having to show I.D. that’s upsetting to me, it’s that enough people were abusing cough medicine that the law had to be written in the first place. Yikes!

Things like this make me all the more concerned for how my children grow up and what becomes important to them in life. I’ve seen the effects of addiction to drugs and smoking and, I just pray they don’t choose that path someday.

What’s in my middle name

Deb (Mom of 3 girls) tagged me for this meme, which I have seen going around Blogland. I had wondered if I would be able to do this if I got tagged because my middle name is long. But I’m going to give it a try anyway. Thanks Deb!

Here are the rules:

1. You have to post these rules before you give the facts.
2. Players, you must list one fact that is somehow relevant to your life for each letter of their middle name. If you don’t have a middle name, use the middle name you would have liked to have had.
3. When you are tagged you need to write your own blog-post containing your own middle name game facts.
4. At the end of your blog-post, you need to choose one person for each letter of your middle name to tag. Don’t forget to leave them a comment telling them they’re tagged, and to read your blog.

Efficient.
Laughing at life and being silly is key for keeping my sanity. And it’s plain old fun.
Impetuous. Luckily I have a calm, level headed husband who is still teaching me to think before I say or do something
Z ealous about life
Adaptable.
Baby blankets. One of my favorite things to crochet.
Empathetic.
Talented. In so many ways, I like to tell myself.
Handsome. My husband, not me. :)

I certainly don’t know 9 bloggers starting with each letter of my middle name so if you’re reading and want to play along, go ahead!

Lucy-Furr, Part II

*So I forgot about the whole name change thing last time so now names have been changed (excepting me). New character names are Dan and Janna.

Last time, on Soap Opera Sunday

I gulped. I’m, the fruitcake? My mind races. Who is this psycho and what is she planning to do to me? Then I have another thought.

“Lucy-Furr? As in Lucifer?” I ask
“Yeah, it’s the pen name she used when she wrote plays in our drama class.”
“Okaaaaaaay then.”
“Look, don’t worry about it,” he reassures me. “She’s just trying to be fun, although I really wish she hadn’t taken my monkey. Carlos is my favorite.”
“Yeah, I know.” I empathize
“Oh, I gotta go, it’s my mom,” he says quickly
“Alright, bye.” I say.

The phone clicks. Then clicks again. I am still holding the phone to my ear when I hear the ring tone. I miss his voice already.

Two weeks pass. The monkeynapping is still on Dan’s mind, but he says he wont approach Janna about it. He hasn’t even talked to her. I am secretly thrilled. For I can see something he either doesn’t see, or won’t admit. She likes him. Well, more than likes him. I mean, c’mon, she stole his monkey and called me a fruitcake. I’ve never seen the girl but I feel this strange sensation towards her. My fingers tingle as I imagine clumps of her hair tangled around them.

Then one night I am walking with Dan to his house. We reach the front door, pausing on the step as we always do to finish up our conversation and hug. His mother must have been waiting for us. She steps outside.

“Dan, Janna is inside. She wants to talk to you.”

My mouth drops, I suddenly feel queasy. Dan looks at me in earnest, with those gorgeous baby blues.

“Look, I’ll talk to her and call you as soon as she leaves.”

All I can do is nod. Without knowing just how, I am walking away, fraught with worry.
I anxiously await the call. Finally it comes.

“What happened?” I question
“Janna brought Carlos back. She said she didn’t mean to hurt me. That she did it so I would come and talk to her since I guess I had kinda been ignoring all my friends since we got together.”
Well I am the girlfriend, I think to myself.
“Was that all?” I ask hopefully
“Well…no.”
My heart skips a beat
“She cried a bit, and told me it really hurt her that I stopped talking to her…” he pauses… “and that she really likes me but of course wouldn’t want to get in the way of things.”
But what did you say? What did you say?!? I am yelling in my head.

“I told her she shouldn’t have called you a fruitcake or stolen my monkey and that we can talk at school or whatever, but can’t hang out anymore.”

YES!!!!! I imagine myself leaping for joy. You fantastic boyfriend you!!! But all I can voice is a small, “Oh.”

I sigh with relief, foolish cur that I am…

To be continued on next weeks …..

Aw shucks, I can leave you with a better cliff hanger than that! Continuing on:

Now, we don’t always walk home, Dan and I. Sometimes, if he has stayed over particularly late my dad drives him home, with myself coming along of course. But this night, a week or so after the Lucy-Furr apologetics (and likely ploy to get some huggage for her tears, which she did NOT get, happily) it is very late. About 1 a.m. late, and my dad insists I stay and go to bed. My pout and explanations of, “It’s only five minutes there and back!” avail me nothing. I hug my boyfriend good-bye at the door.
I wave and blow kisses through the window as they drive away. Then I wait, wanting to know that Dan got home safe. And dad too, of course.
Ten minutes pass. Fifteen. Twenty.
Finally, the sound of an engine lets me know dad has returned. I greet him from the top of the stairs.

“What took so long?” I ask
“You have any girls your age with a grudge against you?”
My eyes widen. Not the reply I was expecting. Fear suddenly fills me.
“Well, maybe, but just one.” I say
“Well, it’s not just one anymore. Looks like she’s got a friend who agrees with her. You won’t believe what just happened….”

To be continued on next weeks edition of Soap Opera Sunday
Soap Opera Sunday is hosted by Brillig of Twas Brillig and Kate of Walking Kateastrophe. Please visit either of their blogs for other Soap Opera Sunday posts!
