Motherhood is…

Motherhood means sacrifice. Forget regular date nights and spontaneous intimacy with the husband. Forget showering and exercise at a set time every day. Forget quiet dinner times and stain free carpet. Forget sleeping in and sleeping uninterrupted.

Motherhood also means love. It means family date nights and family snuggles. It means bubble baths, dancing and walks to the playground. It means little hands helping with the cooking and dusting, trying to be like mommy. It means little hands making messes in pursuit of art, with playdough and crayons and finger paint. It means bright smiley faces in yours at first light, just waiting for the new days adventure. It means waking mommy for comfort when a bad dream has invaded their peaceful slumber.

Motherhood means stress and tears and frustration. But it also means laughter and smiles, learning and love. Most of all it means joy. Though not constant, the joy of motherhood is the greatest of joys I have ever felt.

I think sacrifice was one of the first (if not the first) thing that I thought of to complete that sentence, too. Thanks for including love alongside sacrifice and frustration. When it’s hard, I dwell so much on the negative, but when it’s good, it’s so good–but at those times I’m not “analyzing,” I’m just enjoying, and it becomes so easy to forget the love when the sacrifice and the stress weigh you down.

    Thanks for participating!!

Yes. Motherhood is nothing if not a study in contrasts.

Motherhood is definitely sacrificial, and most days it’s worth all that loss of self. Most days. : )

    Great post!

Thank you for pointing out “both” sides of motherhood–frustration along with laughter–and that it takes both to make a joy that deep.

Motherhood is a bittersweet experience. Thankfully, more sweet than bitter!

Oh yes… motherhood is definitely the hallmark of contrasts. And, it is definitely the model of sacrifice as well.

    Great post! Thanks for sharing!

Beautiful post! I loved the “bright smiley faces in yours at first light, just waiting for the new days adventure…”

I’m not a morning person, but that always manages to put a smile on my face, no matter what time it is!

So lovely and so true! There is nothing better than the smiles, the morning “call” from the other bedroom, family bed snuggles after the race to wake up daddy.
