Sweet Tooth
I have an incurable sweet tooth. When faced with a lack of treats in the house, I can often be found getting a brown sugar fix, by the spoonful, straight out of the bag. I’m not saying I’m proud of this. It is simply a fact I share with you in an attempt to relieve my guilty conscience, for fun.
I’ve also been guilty of digging all of the cookie dough out of the cookie dough ice cream, eating refrigerated hot fudge right out of the jar and enjoying caramel sauce with a side of bananas. And when the local ice cream shop gets a shipment of cake batter ice cream, it’s cake batter malt heaven for me.
Of course, eating anything with chocolate in it will likely never occur again, as I haven’t had any chocolate for over two years now. Don’t worry ’bout me though, I make up for it with other sweets.
I do have this somewhat irrational fear stemming from the chocolate incident however. I worry that there might be chocolate in sweets I buy. This started with the headaches of course and culminated with a purchase at Harry and David, a store in our local mall. No, this is not a sponsored post, but, they do have some gooo-oood sweets!!
Anyhow, around christmas time, a friend and I decided to see what holiday goodies were in stock. While there, I noticed a lovely selection of malted milk balls. They had the traditional chocolate, for which I longed, in addition to some strawberry and raspberry ones.
I decided on the raspberry ones, made my purchase and sat on a mall bench to indulge myself while my friend finished up her selection and purchase. I bit into the raspberry goodness, savoring the surprisingly non-waxy coating, when a familiar taste entered my mouth. Hmmm, I thought, as I crunched. What is that? It’s so familiar…
At that moment the light bulb went on and I instinctively, and rather violently, spat the half chewed mess out into my hand, in front of an old man sitting by the fountain and a couple strolling by. Looks of disgust crossed their faces.
Ignoring them I fished the receipt out of the bag and wiped my hand off with it. Before I marched back in there asking for an exchange, I had to make sure I hadn’t misread the label.
Raspberry Maltballs, it said. Nope, no mention of chocolate there. The ingredient label of course listed cocoa, but I felt strongly that the front label should have indicated it.
I took my open package into the cashier who had just checked me out, told her I was allergic (it causes a bad physical reaction, so that’s allergic right?) to chocolate, which the raspberry maltball label did not say it contained, so could I please have the strawberry ones instead, assuming they did not have chocolate in them. She obliged with sincerest apologies and all was right in my world again. That is, until the banana cream pie blizzard I ordered from DQ in the same mall a week later, came with a few stray chocolate chips in it. This time it was a few dozen people that saw a spastic woman violently spit a mouth full of chocolate chip tainted ice cream onto the floor.
Maybe I should stick with homemade treats from here on out.

OMG no chocolate???? You are a better woman than I. I’m sure you probably got into details about it previously so I won’t ask why. I’m a chocolate addict myself, I know this because when I have a headache, the moment the taste of chocloate hits my tongue the headache disappears. But I enjoy it too much to want to do something about it, and actually enjoy having this excuse to require my husband to buy large amounts of World’s Finest Chocolate every time the school kids go by his office. Also, having chocolate is like taking a long, hot bubble bath when that just isn’t possible, which is most of the time. So I can’t imagine giving it up.
It’s funny you wrote about the malt balls because I just tried Strawberry Whoppers a couple days ago, thinking it was very novel, and that it was very daring of my to buy something that did not contain chocolate, even though the chocolate ones were sitting there right next to the strawberry ones. I loved them!
I went back and read your 100 post… and wow! What a terrible experience for you to go through! I’m sure it is hard to find treats without chocolate. Does this include white chocolate?? If I ever find an amazing treat without chocolate in it, I’ll let you know!!
Oh my…that sure complicates your life, eh?
My husband is allergic to chocolate as well. He gets migraines and chocolate is a guaranteed trigger. My children and I make up for what he can’t eat… It’s also caused me to learn to make non-chocolate desserts.
I have a (somewhat) similar problem. I LOVE mexican food, but I am allergic to jalapeno peppers. No matter how many times you tell your server, you will end up with jalapenos in your food!
I also eat the cookie dough out of the ice cream!
LOL, I remember the chocolate malt ball incident, but it’s too bad I missed the banana split incident.
Okay I just read why you haven’t had chocolate and now it’s making me wonder, because I also suffer from anxiety and panic attacks, as well as a hyper-thyroid problem (can’t keep weight ON). I’m not on meds for any of that, but now I’m wondering if chocolate could be contributing? Please say it ain’t so!
Melissa - I don’t believe it includes white chocolate since it’s not really chocolate, but I don’t care for the stuff anyway. And it really is hard finding great desserts now, especially ice cream. Every ice cream that has caramel or peanut butter in it, nearly always has chocolate in it as well. But I still have pralines n’ caramel and peppermint to turn too.
Oh and Ben and Jerry’s has this new flavor called Cinnamon Buns which is delish!
Holly - Sorry your hubs has to go through the same thing. :(
Mama Zen - I can’t imagine being allergic to jalapeno’s. I love hot and spicy anything, especially Mexican food. We just ate out at our favorite Mexican restaurant last night.
Marie - I wish I knew the answer to that, but I personally think there is some sort of correlation. It’s so hard to describe, but when I went through that reaction, the same day it happened I just “knew” that I couldn’t eat chocolate. It was like a pregnancy aversion, only much much stronger.
After a couple weeks it wasn’t as strong so I ate a mini candy bar and I got the most severe headache. It was probably a migraine, though since I hadn’t had one before I couldn’t be sure. But light was killing me, my head was throbbing and I couldn’t even walk around. Tried it again in a smaller portion a few weeks after that and the same thing happened so that’s when I called it quits.
Oh, I’m sorry you can’t eat chocolate. Ironically, as I read this I was eating angel food cake smeared with nutella. But don’t worry, it wasn’t good.
I love chocolate - but I love sweet sweet candy better :) I’m a Twizzler fanatic - I can’t believe I’m admitting it!!!! Sorry to hear about your experiences and hope you don’t run into the stuff again… :(
oh wow that’s really brutal. Life without chocolate? Harsh. I’ve developed nut allergies and am running into a similar problem. Almonds are in EVERYTHING it seems!
I seriously don’t think I could live without chocolate but I guess if eating chocolate will keep me from living then I’d have to get over my addiction.
Sorry to hear about the headaches, but I think you’re right to spit it out. My friend had a similar thing happen after the birth of her 3rd child. It started with migraines. She went 2 years w/o any chocolate and then her craving got to her.
She thought a York Peppermint Patty wouldn’t be too bad because there’s not much chocolate in it. She actually passed out after one bite. Her allergy is so severe now that she needs an epi-pen. Crazy!
I’ll keep my eye out for any good nochoc desserts.
i am sorry that you have to miss out on something you love. at least you found the trigger. i had gestational diab. while prego and had to cut out sugar and go light on carbs. it was hard b/c i am a diehard sweet tooth. now i am trying to cut out and lose my mommy belly.
sounds like you need to stick to the homemade things. can you imagine the peanut allergy ???
That hot fudge straight out of the fridge thing? I do that.
Allergic to chocolate! Oh no, I’m so sorry! That’s just awful, especailly if you have a sweet tooth!
My husband and I enjoy hot fudge by the spoonfull, without the ice cream.
Allergic to Chocolate? My condolences!
And what’s up with the brown sugar thing? LOL!
Wowoweewa! No chocolate!!! Actually, I guess having a severe medical reason to not eat it would keep one on the non-chocolate diet… hmm… I read your 100th post. I love getting to know people out there that I’ve never met, maybe never will, but out in this universe their are people who are so similar to ourselves, who give us strength by just knowing their out there struggling and smiling. Keep smiling!
