R.I.P. Pinkie
Well, I took care of Pinkie two nights ago after the kids were in bed. Count Dooku was just a little disappointed at not seeing the fish flushed down the toilet. Ha!
As I tossed the little tank into the trash I said to my husband, “I am SO done with fish.”
His reply, “Can I get that writing?”
You see, for Hubby, a house without pets is a great thing. But for me? Not so much. In my parents home in my lifetime we had 2 guinea pigs, 1 bunny, 2 dogs, 13 cats, 12 gerbils, 2 hamsters, 1 dove, 2 finches, 1 parakeet, numerous fish and probably some other pets I can’t remember. Not all at the same time thankfully.
So he’s right, if I don’t sign a form saying I won’t get another fish, I probably will, just to have, “a pet”. Right now we reside in an apartment where the pets I most desire (a dog or a cat) cost extra in the rent each month. So we can’t afford it, and to fill the void I have bought numerous fish. Their tanks are smelly and a pain to clean, but they’re cheap, and they have tanks small enough to put on the top of the TV, out of reach of the kids (well, maybe not, but that’s another story).
I can just imagine urine soaked cedar chips gracing my living room floor if I ever brought a gerbil or hamster home. Shudder. Not an option.
So, for the time being I’ve stuck with fish, imagining the day when I’ll have a sweet dog to play with or a prideful cat to tease (tell me I’m not the only one who has harrassed a cat for fun, playfully of course).

Don’t get me started on cat harrassment. I might just do a series on that some day. Oi, we were cruel kids, my sibs and I.
That’s funny about the fish filling your pet void : ) I do the same thing! We finally did get a cat again and believe it or not, she actually likes being harassed (lucky thing too, with my kids!)
Our cats have learned to hide if they don’t want to be harassed. In fact, it’s usually the opposite - our 5-month-old kitten continually harasses us, even when she has food, water, clean litter, and a friend to play with. I’m hoping she’ll settle down as she gets older! :)
My cat will only come out, after the kids are asleep, and sit on my lap while I’m watching TV or blogging.
I grew up the same way, and my house is a zoo now, even though my husband would be happy without the cats.
We have two cats, one dog, two parrots, and one parakeet, we’ve had a hamster, and another cat, but she ran away. Oh, and we had three goldfish too, but Katelyn decided to feed them a whole pack of saltines. Too much salt, they went belly up, but I was glad she wanted to take care of them by feeding them.
I too miss having pets. We had two dogs when we were in Oregon. But when we moved everyone wanted a HUGE pet deposit. The place we are in now wanted $500 per dog! We didn’t have $1000 :( I miss my puppies… sigh. Someday…
oh I am so right there with ya. The other night we were sitting in the living room looking at our aquarium and I said to Jay, I have grown to despise that FISH TANK OF DEATH. Every time I walk in here I’m afraid I’ll see a floating fish. But I’m sure if we did do away with our own Fish Cemetary I’d be wanting to set it up again in a few months. Fickle, fickle creatures we are!
I am with Tom. However, I married a cat-person. So, we have one cat. He had 4 cats, 2 horses, chickens, lizards, birds, guinea pigs, hamsters, etc. etc. growing up, and so the idea of no pets is hard for him, too. And since I love him, I allowed a cat. Now I don’t think he’s half bad, but that’s because he’s grown on me. It’s hard not to love a pet I’ve cared for over 7 years, you know?
Get an anole lizard. Fun to watch, small, not too hard to deal with. Unless like crickets freak ya out~then don’t get an anole. ;)
I forgot that we have a fish as a pet too :) How about a ferret?

Heads or Tails: Pets
Meet my babies: Cupcake (female, Pug, 9 month-old), C’est Moi (male, Chihuahua, 10 month-old), Chantique (female, Chihuahua, 10 month-old). Cupcake and Chantique just got their first loops and last week end, Chantique was …
I can’t really remember a time when I was “petless” either. I don’t think I would ever want to be. Don’t sign that promise! :)
I love pets, too. Come and see mine if you find time ;-)
I did the same exact thing! My first marriage, we rented and were not allowed pets. So, I got fish… I missed my pets so much that I even had my fish trained! Yes, I had serious issues!
Here’s hoping for a pet-filled future for you & your family! :)
What a well-written, humorous, insightful post! I so much enjoyed reading it; thank you so much.
