WFMW - Emergency Car Kit
We have backpacks with 72 hour supplies in the closet right by the front door, but just in case we had to leave too quickly to even grab those, or in case of breaking down, it’s a good idea to have an Emergency Car Kit.
Items you might consider putting in your kit:
* A heavy blanket or two (in case of a break down in winter)
* A flash light and batteries
* A few snacks (granola bars, dried fruit, crackers etc.)
* Water (I always have a flat of bottled waters in the trunk)
* A Small Shovel
* A first aid kit
All of the items could fit into a small duffle bag kept in the back of your trunk at all times. I’m sure there are other items that would be wise to have on hand. What would you suggest?

A heavy blanket or two… hmmm… maybe for when we travel. But, uh, it was 95 last year on Christmas. So, um, yeah. :) The emergency kit is a great idea though. Something that my mom told me to get was a hand crank flashlight and radio. So that if something was wrong with your car, you’d still have a radio. Actually, WalMart had a handcrank flashlight/radio combo AND you could plug your cell phone to it and charge it up too. Just a thought :)
The radio idea is a great one. Thanks Melissa!
We keep a blanket and first aid kit in our van, but I really should add some of the other items as well. I also keep a few of the cheap rain ponchos in there too, just in case - they also work well if someone needs to sit on plastic for any reason… :)
Why a shovel???
Other handy things to keep in the car: an extra change of clothes for children and mom, antibacterial gel, paper towels, a gallon jug of water, wet wipes, and I ALWAYS keep a case of juice boxes in the trunk!
Great idea! I’ll have to pack something like this before I take my long road trip.
Something to add if you have little ones - diapers!
How about some of those hand warmer packets? They are frequently used for hunters and skiiers. They are inactive until you break the disk inside and then it becomes warm quickly. Also, a shovel is to dig out if you are stuck in the snow.
OIC, I’ve never even seen snow so the only use that came to mind was the ability to quickly dig a shallow grave. But I just moved to an area where it snows so I guess maybe I’d better get a shovel?
