Heads or Tails? - Explore

I knew exactly what I would write about the second I saw this weeks theme. You see, I have two favorite places I love to explore, and this may strike you as odd but here goes.

Cemeteries - I am a genealogist. What can I say?
Whenever we take road trips, I always have the camera with me and I am always on the lookout for small road side cemeteries to photograph. My husband shakes his head and sighs whenever he hears, “Pull over!! Look at that beauty!!”
Part of my obsession is a fascination with aged stone, fragile and beautiful and then of course I love recording the symbols on headstones and finding out what they mean. But I also love to do this for people I may never know. I transcribe the data from the photos or send the photos themselves into sites like www.usgenweb.com in the hope that someone who is looking for information on their Great Great Aunt Lucy, will find it.

Antique Shops - Whenever I decide to visit an Antique Shop, I can be found heading straight to the old photograph section. I love to purchase photographs, especially those with names written on back or photographers stamps, for the same purpose as the above. In the hope that someone looking for information on that person might find it on the internet where I have posted it. I also just love old photographs in general. Daguerrotypes and Tin types and others. Some of them are so unique and beautiful. It is fun to try to date them based on the clothing worn in the picture or the photographer stamp on back.

So there you have it. My unique explorations! Be sure to visit Skittle’s Place for other’s interpretations of the word Explore.

I also like antiques. I like those cemetaries in LA - you know the above ground ones. And I like the really old family cemetaries where there are only 10-15 plots and they are surrounded by a picket or iron fence. Other than that - not a big cemetary fan. But I think it’s interesting how you view them - definately something I never thought much about.

I love the sense of history you get in a cemetery. I wonder about people’s lives, who they were, what they did.

My husband loves genealogy, so he would be a big fan of yours!

I love exploring old cemeteries also. I love exploring the history of those resting there.

I enjoy cemeteries too. And what an incredibly thoughtful thing to do for other people. I’m sure that you’ve helped a lot of people by posting your photos and information.

I, too, like to walk through old cemeteries. I like finding unusual names.

antique stores are my favorite places to explore. Cemeteries are just fascinating to me.

If you need a new driver, give me a holler. I would love to do both of those things! :)

I would love to explore cemeteries and antique shops someday - it seems like I’m always in a hurry whenever I see one or the other though…

I love cemeteries: the warm family stories, the awful tragedies. It links us all to our ancestors, even if they aren’t. I just found some stones that I can’t read. Can you just go up and do a rubbing or do you need permission?
