WFMW - Did you know you could freeze these?
For most of my young life I found myself often wasting things that I didn’t get around to using in time or simply because I was ignorant of the fact that they could be frozen. I have since learned that many things freeze and thaw well and here are just a few of them:
Bananas - I can’t tell you how many times I’ve planned on making banana bread and kept putting it off, only to find that the bananas were oozing and moldy. So now, when those bananas are perfectly overripe I peel the skin off, throw them in a freezer sturdy ziploc bag put them into the freezer. When I want to make bread I thaw them at room temperature. Another suggestion I’ve heard but haven’t tried is to first mash the bananas with a small amount of lemon juice and then freeze them in ziploc bags.
Egg Whites - When a recipe calls for yolks only, pour each egg white into individual cube sections in an ice cube tray. After they’re completely frozen you can pop the cubes out and store in the freezer in a marked ziploc bag. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator.
Avocados - You can freeze ripe avocados if you’re not going to be able to use them before they spoil. Mash the avocados with a fork, add a little lemon juice and fill a freezer sturdy ziploc bag, squeezing all the air out before sealing. Thaw in the refrigerator.
Cookie Dough Do you like to make your holiday cookies from scratch? Why not get an early start by making the dough and freezing it to bake for later? The best way to do this is to form the dough into a long tube shape and wrap it numerous times very tightly in plastic wrap to avoid freezer burn. Thaw in the refrigerator.
Muffin Batter - Tracy Michele shared this wonderful idea on WFMW a little over a month ago.
Freezing a variety of foods works for me.

I like to buy extra loaves of bread since my family looooooves bread, and put them into the deep freezer until I need them. This keeps me from having to guy and buy bread every other day, and it keeps well in the freezer, provided it’s not there for longer than a month. After that, the bread tends to be a bit chewy after it’s thawed out. Ta for now dahling!
I’m totally LOL’ing at myself for my typo. In case you didn’t catch it, I typed ‘having to guy and buy bread’ when it should have been ‘having to go and buy bread’. HA! Aren’t t ypos fun? HeeHee
I didn’t know you could freeze avocados. I need a chest freezer soooo bad…
Why did I not know this? Great info, thanks!
Great tips!
Great info! I have lost some $$ avacados!
You can also freeze cheese. Just grate it, lay it out on a pan, and freeze. Once it’s frozen, transfer it to a container.
Thanks for the avocado tip! I didn’t know about that one.
I freeze any vegetables that I know I can’t use in time for SOUP!
Great tips! I freeze mashed potatoes–I make 5 lbs at a time and divide between several quart freezer bags. One time to peel, chop, strain, mix, and clean up and 5 side dishes ready to microwave from the freezer!
Great info!!!
I only recently learned that you can freeze avocadoes. Now I’m waiting for them to go on sale. They’re so expensive, but we love them.
Another expensive thing I freeze when it is on sale is butter. That’s another sale I’m waiting for…I’m down to my last few sticks, and I sure don’t want to pay $5 a pound for it, LOL!
I accidentally discovered how to freeze dry a Halloween pumpkin by leaving it in a frost free freezer for nine months. Here’s more detail: http://feefifoto.typepad.com/feefifoto/2007/10/halloween.html
I had no idea either that you could freeze egg whites and avocados.
Great tips.
I had no clue about the avacados either! Thanks for the tip!
Come visit me at the Big Yellow House sometime!

Any tips on the best way to freeze avocados. Do you freeze them whole?
You freeze them mashed with a little lemon juice and put in a ziploc. :)
What about peanut butter cookie dough? Do the oils separate when it thaws?
Peanut butter cookie dough should be fine. Just be sure to thaw it in the fridge.
When freezing eggs, say for Breakfast Casserole and/ or Quiche, Do you NEED to cook them first or can you freeze them and cook them when you are ready for them?
To freeze shredded cheese I once read to add corn starch to keep it from sticking together in a clump. So, I have also done that with other things like green peppers and mushrooms. they come apart easily to use in recipes and the corn starch give no flavor. Also, maybe good to freeze like chopped onion. It works “great” to have some green pepper in the winter when veggies are high in price. So, you can dice some for sauces, meat loaf, soups or make slivers or rings for maybe pepper steak.
Now I know I can freeze avocados! I wonder if you could chop them up into small pieces instead of mashing them?? Has anyone tried doing this?
