Thanksgiving Meal
What does your traditional Thanksgiving dinner consist of?
We’re pretty standard over here. Turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, yams with marshmallows on top (which only Hubby eats), a green vegetable, cranberry sauce and maybe some rolls. Then I make pumpkin and pecan pies.
*EDITED TO ADD* - Oh and just because I feel like making you all jealous, =P, Hubby makes everything but the pies (which I make). The man just loves to cook, especially the biggest meal of the year, so I leave him to it.

We’re traditional, too. The night before we bake homemade lemon meringue pie. We also set our turkey to soaking in a brine solution saturated with fresh spices, vegies, and kosher salt. In the morning, we stuff it and set it to cooking. Our dinner is completed with mashed potatoes and gravy, warm rolls and butter, finger olives, a green vegetable, and dessert.
Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. It’s like Christmas, but without all the stress of gifts. We wake up to watch the NBC Thanksgiving Day Parade because it is preceeded by several currently running Broadway stage performances as well as The New York City Rockettes. Then there’s the fun floats, musical guests, and the jolly ole fella himself. And afterwards, we love to watch the National Purina dog show. Fun! Fun!
You’ll die, but until the last 5 years, our family went to Mesquite for Thanksgiving and ate the big dinner at the Oasis hotel and casino. All our aunts, uncles, cousins came along, as it was our yearly family reunion. It sounds so… I hate to use this word, but… trashy, but I have really fond memories of it. The last few years we’ve done “real” dinners at home and it’s a strange change. I miss our unconventional celebration from the past, but it also feels so loving and warm and festive to gather round the table at home.
Oh man, my Mom still cooks ours, and she goes all out! We have salads, turkey, dressing, potatoes, green beans, homemade yeast rolls, “heavenly carrots”, pecan & chocolate pecan pies, cheesecake, the list goes on.
Pretty standard over here, too. Though my grandmother-in-law likes to bring a really dee-lish pea and cauliflower salad (sounds gross, but it’s actually really good!) And my sister-in-law usually brings her scrumptious sweet potato casserole. And my mother-in-law is in charge of pies - I think she’s bringing 12 pies this year!!
I think I’ll dig out my elastic waistband pants just in case. *grin*
We’ve moved around too much to really develop any traditions. When we decided to move to NM, we agreed it would be our last move ever (except local moves of course). My parents just sold their house and are moving here in April, I also have an aunt and two cousins here. So I’m really looking forward to starting some new traditions!
Well… our TRADITIONAL meal is just that - THE traditional meal… Turkey, stuffing, mashed, sweet, green beans, cranberry sauce, rolls, GRANDMA’s macaroni & cheese, and pumpkin pie.
BUT… we haven’t had a tradtional Thanksgiving in about 5 years now. And we won’t this year either.
We usually go to Ron’s parents and she does the traditional turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes and all of that. She doesn’t have room for a formal sit down meal, so it’s basically the kids, her and me at the table (plus assorted cousins and whoever else is there female and kid-wise) while all the men eat in front of the tv while they watch football. :)
Usually we go to my inlaws either Nana’s, my SIL’s or my MIL’s, and have the Traditional Turkey dinner. This year my grandparents are coming, so (my husband who also likes to cook the turkey as long as I cook everything else) we’re having it with my family this year.
I am so excited for Thanksgiving this year. It’s my in-law’s “turn” to have us over, so we’ll probably be having authentic Mexican food like carnitas, horchata, pozole, Mexican pastries, flan, etc. Yum!
While Tom and Salvador have their similarities, the love for cooking is not one of them. Oh well. At least I can take advantage of your husband’s culinary hobby when I visit. Mmmmmm, buffalo wings…
We’re staying home this year and my mom is coming. I’m not sure who else might show up. We’re pretty traditional: turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, stuffing, broccolli salad, pretzel jello salad, homemade rolls, apple pie, mint chocolate pie, sparkling cider.
oh you are one lucky girl. i think the thanksgiving and christmas dinners are always the most stressful ones to cook and bake. what a good man!
Turkey, Ham, White Rice, Macaroni Salad, My famous Portugese Stuffing, gravy, Mash Potatos, Pumpkin Pie! Some years it can get crazy with more food than needed, BUT what I listed is the main fare!
Now that my grandmother and my dad have passed away, it’s just me, my mom & my brother. So, there’s not much need for a huge meal. Our tradition used to be turkey or ham, crockpot mac & cheese (my specialty), dressing & gravy, green bean casserole, sweet potato casserole with marshmallows & pecans, cranberry sauce, homemade biscuits or rolls, tea, coffe, and some sort of yummy dessert (mom makes this cake that I love that I call the “poke cake”). Last Thanksgiving was the 1st w/out daddy, so we were invited by our closest friends to celebrate with them. I’m not sure what we’ll do this year, if anything!
We usually cater our dinner. This way no one has to cook and everyone can just enjoy the day. My Mom’s motto is - Why do it yourself when you can pay someone else to do it. LOL!
Yes - have to have the yams with the marshmellows on top! And the big ol’ turkey - I can’t wait!! Have a great weekend, Summer.
Pretty much the same as you, but a lot more pies! We make every kind of pie and eat until we are sick. Oh, and no yams for us.
Our Thanksgiving dinner is very traditional. Turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, corn, green beans, yams w/ brown sugar and marshmallows, cranberry jello w/ cranberries and mandarin oranges, (I always volunteer to make those last two if we’re going somewhere) green salad, (which doesn’t get eaten because of all the other yummy stuff) pumpkin and apple pies and my favorite tiny tart size pecan pies. I’m curious to see where Thanksgiving will be this year. Last year we were living in Florida but this year we’re home in CA where the kids live.
Ooooo! Not fair! Mine won’t be caught dead in the kitchen unless it’s to pillage the fridge : P
