This is getting increasingly worrisome

The number of toy recalls on products made in China due to lead is seriously disturbing. But now a new, super popular toy has just been recalled for a reason scarier than lead. The popular toy, Aqua Dots has been recalled after some infants and kids swallowed the beads and had to be hospitalized since the beads metabolize into a date rape drug when ingested. You can read the full article here.

I’m absolutely sickened after reading about this and after reading about the thousands of toy recalls that have occured just over the last few months. With the holidays coming up we need to be particularly wary of what we are purchasing for our children this year. I’ve decided as a general rule I am simply not going to purchase anything made in China at this point. I know that may limit my choices dramatically but I’m sure I’ll be able to find great quality toys that won’t poison my children in some manner.

I’ve been able to keep up to date on the many toy recalls through a fabulous blog called Not China Made which also provides a list of China free stores.

Be sure to visit the blog and educate yourself on the serious situation we are facing in the toy industry right now.

My daughter had asked me repeatedly for some Aqua Dots, but I never bought them. I’m so glad that I didn’t!

Thanks for pointing us to Not China Made!

It’s crazy!! I’m glad I’m not really buying all these toys anymore - little kid toys - but it makes you fear all toys and it is crazy!! See ya.

I can’t believe that the beads metabolize into the date rape drug! That is really, really freaky. Christmas presents this year are going to be a little trickier than normal. Luckily, Curious George is still too young to ask for specific presents.

It’s sad that so many options are no longer available if we’re only buying things when we know exactly where they come from and what they contain. That news story just horrified me.

GOOD! I am so sick of the aqua dots commercial! i swear it is the only one they have on PBS! My son is constantly asking me to buy them for him, and I won’t! Now I really won’t!

Oh great, they just made date-rape accessible. How long before teens include these in their games of truth or dare?

I almost bought these for a birthday gift last week. I’m so glad now that I didn’t.

I am wondering if there have been studies about lead and autism? It might explain a lot.

Oh, man. Now I don’t feel guilty for depriving my children of things.

Maybe we’ll stick with a Disneyland vacation for Christmas instead of gifts? I’m thinking we just might have to…

Corrie, I have to agree with your assessment. I hope they tore those things off the shelves as fast as they could before college kids and teens started buying them…

    I found you through Cheryl.

I haven’t really been too worried about the recalls….we only had one toy that was recalled and it wasn’t a big deal. Then I read about the Aquadots and I am so disturbed by it. I am really thinking that I would love to buy my kids Christmas from companies that are all made in the USA, but then is it going to cost more?

Thanks for the great resources, and for giving me something to think about!

These revelations were made in the Australian media early this week and the toys were removed from shelves immediately. We call them Bindeez here.

    As a parent, I was shocked ….

ya, i’m not a fan of tons of toys. less means my kids have to use their imaginations more. there’s a new store that i’m meaning to check out that is entirely organic, educational toys. you really can’t go wrong there.

I read that article yesterday and just about threw up! What are people thinking? I mean, really???? I’m with you on the China-free Christmas.

It makes saving money easier - no toys to buy :) !!

I’ve come so close to buying Aqua Dots for the kids, but I couldn’t see myself spending that much money. Thank goodness I’m cheap like that, I probably saved their lives.
