I only looked away for two minutes!

I’ve been sitting here commenting on some of my favorite blogs, frequently checking on the baby crawling around on the floor. One comment took a little less than two minutes to formulate. I turned around to see a happy baby smiling at me with completely blue fists and a blue mouth.

“Ack!” I cried, startled.

I ran to her and grabbed a tiny blue ink pad out of her baby fist (it was the top to a Spiderman pen Obi-Wan left on the floor. grrr). She then stuck her tongue out at me which was also completed coated in blue. Upon further examination I found her gums and her first baby tooth that she cut just 4 days ago were also completely blue. I might have taken a picture if I wasn’t freaking out just a bit.

I rushed her to the bathroom, held her over the sink and with cupped hands full of water started trying to rub the blue ink off her face and out of her mouth. It lightened only slightly.

Then came the rubbing alcohol and the cotton balls and finally a toothbrush. She enjoyed all of it thoroughly thinking that I was playing a new game.

“Yes baby, this is called the, Let’s scrub your face raw so mom doesn’t look like a shmuck game.”

The rubbing alcohol and cotton balls only worked slightly around her mouth and cheeks, but the soft bristled toothbrush was what finally got it all off. The toothbrush worked on her gums and baby tooth as well but her tongue is still a light blue color. Testament to the fact that, yes, mom looked away. Even if it was only for two minutes. *sigh*

P.S. Most ink pads are non-toxic right? I mean if it was part of a kids pen it should be non-toxic right? Or should I be worried? Because she really licked that thing good!

I’m sorry for loling, it’s just… “yes, this is called the, Let’s scrub your face raw so mom doesn’t look like a shmuck game” can you blame me? :) I would guess non-toxic as well, especially for kids, but I’m no expert on the matter.

I bet you’ll get a lot of comments on this post that start with, “If it makes you feel better…”

So here’s mine:
If it makes you feel better, I was working one day several months ago, and my son, who was incapable of rolling was lying on the side of the desk (it’s a U shaped desk) on top of a folded blanket. I had my hand on his belly while I typed with one hand. Something drew me in and I let go of him for maybe 10 seconds to type something really quick and during those 10 seconds he rolled right off the desk and landed face down on the carpet. I.FREAKED.OUT. I left the office early and bawled all afternoon. And anyone who asked why I was crying ended up telling me a story that started with “If it makes you feel better”… and their stories TOTALLY made me feel better. HAHA

Yikes !!!
Today my 3 year old colored marker in both ears, she is sick and i am probably heading to the dr’s office, where they will check her ears for infections and notice that she has blue in one and red in the other NICE !!

last night in the bathtub, my 1 year old eat some of the bathroom crayons, she was all blue, and it wouldn’t come off her front tooth.

gotta love it.

Okay, so here’s my ‘if it makes you feel better.’ A few weeks ago, we had my ill niece visiting for a sleepover (long story). So, I rubbed some vicks on her feet to try to help her coughing fits. Unfortunately, I forgot to put the lid back on. So,….

Sweet Pea (1 year old) got into it, sucking on the lid, getting it all over her hands and face. Well, I called Poison Control, and the woman suddenly becomes urgent: “How much did she have? I need to know, because this could be deadly!”

Okay, so I’ll freak out now!!! I had no idea how much she’d had!!! She told me things to watch for, and if nothing happened within about 30 minutes, she should be fine. Sweet Pea had some minor shakes for a few minutes, but nothing big happened. The woman called back to check in about an hour later, while I had been prepping to hit the ER.

She seems to be fine. But, I think you should hand over that Shmuck award to me now…. I laughed at that remark too, I must admit. ;-)

(Hope your baby girl’s okay!!! I’m sure she will be :-) )

**BTW, if they ingest more than a teaspoon, it’s cause for alarm.

Funny! Well, it’s never boring there is it?

I cannot think of any good coloring stories to tell you other than the time my daughter traced all the panels on the doors of our apartment with red ink - the day before we were supposed to move. That same daughter colored in her windowsill (completely) with pencil the first time and crayon the second time - just a week after I had repainted it white.

Try and see if the ink pad has a label that says non-toxic. Don’t worry, Baby Bug “wears” a different color almost every day. Thank goodness for long pants and shirts! hee hee

Today? I found about a dozen half eaten strawberries ground into Emma’s bedspread and carpet.

I have to confess. It was more than two minutes.

None of my kids have died from ink poisening yet, so I think you are alright. (I have four kids and they all have been beautifully decorated multiple times!) I finally threw away all markers in my house. I hate cleaning up after them.

Don’t worry, it happens to every mom and it will happen again! At least it wasn’t a permanent sharpie marker like Anson did once all over his face, mouth, and arms. It was there for days!! Do you know how many people asked me if I knew my child had ink on his face?? No…really??

Ah, we all have moments like that… I was babysitting my brother one time and trying to make a cake for my mom (which I was 100% NOT supposed to do) and I left the food coloring out. Not just the little tear drop shaped ones… the decorators gel stuff. The gel that is permanent. I don’t remember how long he was blue for…
It will wear off… and I wouldn’t think it would be toxic…

Hahaha… don’t worry, I’m sure ink “builds character.” Really the answer to all parenting foibles.

As for the post about being on display in the bathroom, I’ve thought about blogging about that several times but was worried I was the only one… whew! Glad I”m not!

KellanJanuary 4th, 2008 at 1:54 am

“she really licked that thing good” - HA! I’m sure it was non-toxic! Good thing you caught her - right? It happens to the best of us. See ya. Kellan

I would bet it was non-toxic, and sorry, but I’m really laughing! We’ve had some Sharpie marker adventures here that haven’t exactly put me in the running for Mom Of The Year…

Now I’m really curious what an ink pad tastes like.

cherylJanuary 4th, 2008 at 1:08 pm

Haha! I’m sure she’s fine.

AACK! I can’t believe this, but as I was typing the first line, I turned to see #4 with a marker in his hand and a nice brown line across his cheek. I’m not making this up! I guess we’re all guilty of blogging a little too much. :)

p.s. I’m sure your sweet baby would have found the inkpad whether you were blogging or doing dishes, if it makes you feel better!

tiggymooshooJanuary 4th, 2008 at 2:59 pm

LOLOLOL!
I’m sure it ws non toxic. She sounds like she had a ball!
Babies are fast and messy. Your story brought back funny freak out moments of when my oldest twins were discovering how messy they could get.

JaniceNWJanuary 4th, 2008 at 3:34 pm

LMAO! She’ll be fine. I’m sure she looks quite cute in blue. The ink is non-toxic. Been there, done that.

I’m thinking shades of green(my fav) for blog but I need ideas on header!

Thanks sweetie for offering to help!! Hugs.

What is it with kids sucking on markers? Isn’t the taste foul? My 1 1/2 year old loves to eat markers and pens. Don’t understand the appeal.

debmomof3January 5th, 2008 at 11:57 pm

Ok, I can’t help but to laugh! I know Becca would do the same thing if she were to get a hold of one of the big girls stamp pads. It reminds me of an episode a couple of years back involving Hannah and a yellow highlighter, although that was much less visible… But we still went through the whole scrubbing routine anyway… :)

KristinJanuary 7th, 2008 at 3:14 am

It should be non-toxic, I couldn’t imagine it not being. I did laugh too and your efforts to clean up the mess. lol
