Afraid of everything

It was 85 degrees yesterday. EIGHTY FIVE. Of course we had to go out and enjoy the fine weather. So after picking Count Dooku up from school, we drove to our favorite playground. I settled down around the sand box where Count Dooku was playing. Then I encouraged Obi Wan to join his brother. Obi Wan whimpered sadly and shook his head. He sat down by me instead and I assumed he would go off and play soon enough. But he didn’t.

My conversation with a friend kept getting interrupted by, “Aaaagh!” and “No-ho-ho-ho-ho!” and “Eeeee!” followed by a cowering four year old clasping my arm or snuggling into me. I was so focused on conversing that I didn’t register his behavior in my head at first. Every time he made a noise I just kept telling him to shush or to go play. Finally it clicked and I wondered what all of his fussing was about and why he wasn’t playing.

“Obi Wan, what in the world is the matter?”
“I mee a go home!”
“No you don’t need to go home. Why are you squealing so much?”
“Aaaaagh! A bug! A bug!”
I shooed a little fly away from him
“Nohoooooo! Go away bee!”
“I shooed the fly away from him again.
“Are you flipping out because of the bugs?” I asked
“I no wike bugs mom.”

Well I guess that was my answer. I kept encouraging him to play but he wouldn’t leave my side. I had thought he wasn’t afraid of bugs anymore. Last Summer he was but then he seemed to get over it.

Oh.
Wait.
He didn’t get over it. The bugs just died. Now they’re back and Obi Wan is as afraid as ever. Combine that with his stubborn personality and no amount of coaxing could get him to leave my side for an instant. The constant squealing and whining was pretty darn annoying. I did have to laugh though when the whining that interrupted me at one point went like so,

“Mom, iss da big bad wofe. I scared a da big bad wofe.”
“Big bad wolf? What in the world do you mean?”
“Der mom, da big bad wofe.”

His little finger pointed toward a park bench where a huge husky sat panting in the shade of a tree, it’s owner holding the leash.

My boy is afraid of bugs and dogs and I don’t know what to do to help him get over it. *sigh*

Oh, that’s so hard :( I wish I had some good pointers, but I don’t. My 4yo was terribly afraid of the toilet overflowing and getting water all over the floor (which has *never* happened in our house), but she somehow grew out of that fear on her own.

Me, I’m irrationally afraid of bees. I’ve only been stung once, and while it was on the ball of my foot and hurt like heck, I’m not afraid of them just because I’m afraid of being stung. We were shopping just the other day and two wasps were hanging out by my side of the car, and DH was just rolling his eyes at me running and screaming from the wasps. “They aren’t going to sting you if you leave them alone!” He would insist. Well I know that as well as the next person! And I’m certainly not about to swat at the darn things. But I think he did finally end up pinning it down for me - it’s like I’m afraid of the air attack or something. I’m fine if they’re grounded, or at least nowhere near me. But as soon as they swoop towards me, my whole body and voice reacts, against my best will. It’s embarrassing. And it’s so bad that when my daughter was younger, she saw me react to bees to the point of nearly crying hysterically (quite a few had found their way into my parked car when I had left the windows down - dumb move!), and then went on to say she was “afraid of bees” every time something scared her (for instance, upstairs neighbors stomping loudly) for the next year.

If something can cure me of my bee fear, maybe it would work for Obi Wan! Unfortunately I don’t know what the cure is. :(

My son was playing outside the other day and there were some big bumble bees. He wasn’t liking them swarming around his head, and told me, “I no like bees!” Hopefully it won’t interfere with his playing too much! :-)

My oldest was terrified of bugs of any type. He’d even freak out over ants. Now at 6 1/2 he’s finally over that and loves to play outside. So there is an end in sight.

Well, I guess a husky does kind of look like a wolf! hee hee

I think it’s only a stage that he’ll outgrow eventually. Hang in there!

I love how you sometimes capitalize Summer when you’re just talking about the season. :P

Ha! I’m so use to capitalizing it, I’ve never even thought about it.

My son is afraid of eating normal food and wearing short sleeved shirts. They all come preprogrammed with something, now just to figure out how to survive it :) !!

Hannah was terrified of bugs last summer (at age 4 - hmmmm), but she hasn’t seemed to be this year. Or maybe there just aren’t many bugs around yet. I guess we’ll find out. :)

    Good luck!

I don’t have kids to be afraid of bugs, but I have myself. I awoke this morning and went to climb in the shower, when I was stopped by a huge bug with hundreds of legs. It was so disgusting I woke Jim up to come kill it. Then my whole shower was ruined because I kept envisioning the scene in Arachnophobia where the spider falls down the water. I hate bugs and spiders in my shower!

My kids are way older than 4 and they are still scared of bugs and dogs. Not sure why or how to help them Good luck on this one.
