The good, the bad and the ugly
The Good - My mother flew into town yesterday and will be with us for the week. Yay!
The Bad - Count Dooku appears to have an allergy to something. Lately his eyes have become very red and itchy at random. Today though he really scared me when after a 28 minute drive he got out of the car and I saw his eyes had become slits. The lower lid on both of his eyes were each so puffed up, they looked like there was something stuffed inside of them. We’re waiting for a blood test to tell us if it’s something seasonal or if it’s the hamster. If you have any suggestions to help him in the mean time (besides Benadryl which didn’t do much besides making him sleepy) it would be appreciated.
The Ugly - That monthly visitor of women reared her ugly head yesterday after a 1 year 9 month break. Woe is me!

1- how happy that you have your mom to visit you! I wish that could happen more often for me. I haven’t seen my mom in 2 years.
2- try super-dosing on vitamin C. My husband does it whenever he’s feeling seasonal allergies coming on, and it clears it up in minutes. He’s had another adult friend try it, with the same results. He (well, our whole family) takes vitamin C in powder form mixed in water. We’re talking something like 1600% daily value per scoopful. (hubby also likes to add sugar to his, to make it more like a juice than a super-sour drink.)
3- Wow, you’re lucky you had such a long break. My longest yet is 15 months, and I felt like queen of the world for that time!
Hate to tell you, but it’s probably the hamster. If my daughter washed her hands really well after holding hers, her eyes were less likely to puff up.
1- Have a blast with your mama! I just had to say good bye to mine today after a week long visit. I’m going to miss her.
2-I got nothing but a sad little frown on my face for Count Dooku. Sorry I can’t help you out.
3-Lucky you! And at the same time…not so lucky you. I am in the process of emptying the milk out of my body and going to formula (boo!) and I’m not looking forward to having to deal with that again either.
Summer, tell your mom I said hello. Haven’t seen her in ages. Wish I was better at keeping in touch.
3–I’m going on 15 1/2 years of surgically induced freedom now. Of course, there are some drawbacks, like dry skin, facial hair…but the trade is worth it.
Good and bad indeed!
Warm compresses and cold compresses alternately. The warm will help fight whatever is bugging him, the cold will help take the swelling down. Take him to see an Optometrist if you can, as that’s the sort of thing they’re trained for (I should know, eh?).
Have a good visit with your mum!
At least your mom is there to help!
Hello! Just wanted to suggest a couple of things for the allergies. You may want to research using local honey (my sister swears by it with her son) and probiotics (my brother swears by it for his allergies). Of course, you need to run it by the Dr. These aren’t to relieve symptoms…they are supposed to strengthen the immune system and prevent the hystamine reaction.

Allergies stink! Sometimes when mine get really bad the whites of my eyes will swell and get bumpy. I look like a monster, but the best thing for somewhat instant relief is to take a cold wet washcloth and lay down with it draping across his eyes. I don’t know if he will stay there long, but it always helps me temporarily.
Enjoy your mom. Mine just left yesterday. It was so fun to have her here!
No idea what to tell you about the allergies :S Hope you can figure it out soon…
Have a good time with your mom!
Having Aunt Flo show up after that long pregnancy / nursing absence is especially scary for me because it always means I will be pregnant again in a month. Shall we anticipate the news? :P
#10 –Haha! That’s awesome.
Summer-
1- Hooray for moms!
2- Hooray for moms to help figure out what is wrong with our offspring! (not sure how to help, here, although it does sound like it’s the Hamster).
3- Hooray for moms to sympathize with our monthly plight! Although I can’t say I feel too sorry for you. Sorry! It’s just that, let’s see…I’ve had four kids…I’ve nursed all four full time for at least 8 months…and Aunt Flo shows up about one week after my 6 week appointment (so, 7 weeks after childbirth). So, no. I can’t feel TOO sorry for you. :( But I can sympathize! Here is me sympathizing…
Have a wonderful visit with your mom! Marissa’s eyes did that with our hamster and with cats. The warm/cold compresses work. The doctor also suggested, it may be a bit much, but washing his hair, helps to get all the allergens off. Hopes this helps.
It’s so good to have visits from mom. For the allergies I always do a cold washcloth on my eyes when they get bad. Claritin is a better allergy medicine for kids. My oldest takes it every day, he seems to be allergic to something in his classroom.
Good luck!
Have fun with your mom! And good luck on the allergies. I think it’s great that you are working to find out what it is. And I’m with #10-We’ll be waiting the news:) HA! HA! After 6 kids, I had to have my tubes tied or I would have another one by now.
I’ve never had a break before. 21 months! Wow!
1. Yay for mums. Hope you have a lovely time together.
2. Hope you find answers really soon
3. Yuck and does that mean you’ll have an announcement soon????
Moms. Are. The. Best….Hope you are having fun.
For the allergies…does it help to use allergy drops. You could try something like Visine A (A for allergy) or something like that to see if it helps while you are waiting for the results. An Ophthalmologist could get you some really good allergy drops.
Sorry about Aunt Florence…but at least that means your “system” still knows how to work…
1. I hope you have a wonderful time with your mom! :)
2. It does sound like some sort of allergy - I hope they can figure out what it is and how to treat it soon, poor kid.
3. Ugh - mine came back last time after only a lovely 7 months even with breastfeeding Becca. Sigh.
I’m sorry, but I had to chuckle at the ugly, head-rearing womanly thing. (hee hee)
Only because, uh, hello! My little Red-Headed Aunt is scheduled to visit today sometime, and I really don’t feel too accommodating for guests right now!
Stupid PMS…..
Hope you have a great time with your Mother visiting, though! That sounds nice. :)
And good luck finding a cure to the swollen eyes - I do hope it is something that has treatment. That’s no fun! :( Poor little guy.
i hope they’re able to figure out what’s wrong so he can be comfortable again. that doesn’t sound fun! neither does your monthly visitor. bummer..
Your ped. did not mention antihistamine eyedrops? I use them from January-March and again in the fall. They help with itching(gotta do them first thing every morning). They have prescription and OTC but I would hesititate to give a child an OTC med. Plus if it is an allergy to the hamster or pollen he should be on an antihistamine. They have prescription one for kids that make them much less drowsy thank benadryl. Poor lil guy.
I’m so happy your mom is there to help. Moms are such a gift and a blessing.
Hugs.
