Rising Prices

What are you doing to cut down on the cost of living in your household?

We’ve started shopping at Aldi, I’ve been learning how to play the Drugstore Game and couponing big time. And all of it is paying off.

I’m thinking I will be going to Aldi’s too, but if its not on sale we don’t get it, like meats, omg we are just bound to become vegetarians.

I’ve been doing the Grocery Game coupon thing, and it’s made a big difference. Beyond that, I’m shopping at thrift stores, trying to walk more (tough in an area that’s not really suited to that), and trying to make a little extra cash on the side for unexpected stuff. Not fun, is it?

Using way less brand names here!

::sigh:: We are a bit in over our head right now and our result is pretty simple: spending lock down - if we don’t need it, we don’t get it - at least for a few months. In general though, we just try to play it smart - we have basic basic cable for $12 a month instead of all the wonderful channels that come with normal people’s cable, we get basically the local channels. We avoid the big cost grocery stores and other retail outlets, and don’t vacation anywhere we can’t drive to.

I miss Aldi’s! You can get food SO freaking cheap! I wish we had one out here! I could cut my food bill in half if we did!! Lucky duck!

I’ve really started to watch the sales around at different stores (instead of just shopping at Walmart alone). Like yesterday I found a store getting rid of cereal for $1.50 and if you bought 10 or more they were only a $1. I bought 20. I think I’ll go back and buy 20 more to save! My husband is considering trading in a car for a motorcycle… if only we could figure out the winter month logistics!

I wish we had an Aldi’s. We have a Winco, but it’s all the way across town and I don’t know that what I save there, makes up for the cost of gas. Plus, they don’t have ads, which is hard to compare. I have been watching ads and cutting more coupons.

I’m thinking of starting a price book to keep track of prices, and I’ve considered doing one of these grocery game type things.

It’s really affecting us. We have no extra $$ anyway, and with the gas costs increasing and grocery costs increasing, it’s scary.

We make sure we stick to a very strict budget. We pull out our set amount of cash every month, file it into appropriate envelopes (groceries, entertainment, household, dining, clothing, etc.). When the envelope is empty, that’s it. No more. It makes us very careful, especially with groceries. This next week (the last week of the month) I have only $44 for groceries. That’s it, and that’s all that I will be spending. It sucks, but it works.

I’ve cut out buying any snacks, like crackers, cookies and chips. We’ve been buying non-name brand items for awhile now, and only if their sale price is better than the store brand.

Its’ easy, you plan a trans atlantic move, you sell everything you own and live with your mom till you leave. Its amazing how much money you save! Ok seriously, this transition time has made me realise how little you actually need. And becasue we have sold the things that were costing us money, house, car, etc we have drastically reduced the cost of our living. But to live here is expensive. Hopefully in the UK, we will be more conservative.

Never heard of Aldi — will check it out.

Jen E — Raise your 12 basic cable and say we only have bunny ears. With so many shows online (and we do pay about 50 for good internet, I admit!), and the library for kids’ movies, we don’t need “real” tv at all!

The only major change we’ve made recently is how we use our A/C and other electricity. We’ve kept our A/C turned off as much as humanly possible, and when we need a break, we turn it on until it hits about 75, and then turn it off again. I’m happy to report that this month’s electricity usage compared to the same month last year (which had the same avg. temp) was about 350 kwh lower! And we’ve adapted to the heat a lot better (to the point where my kids are saying they’re “too cold” at about 78 degrees!!). We’ve also been better about keeping our lights turned off during the day while we’re at home, and only using the outside light most of the time. And of course, we’ve set our computers to hibernate after about 15 minutes of non-use, which also cuts down on our electricity usage, and it’s nice and quick to get them going at a moment’s notice if we need to use them again.

No Aldi’s here. I don’t play the coupon game. I’m carpooling to work, and try to cut down on trips in the car. Mostly I just try to work some over time to pay for everything. It’s just terrible isn’t? The price of gas and everything it affects!

Not buying as many uneccessary things and eating out less. Some things like gas and food we can’t cut out and those are the most expensive!
