Cabbage Patch Kids have returned!

So Team Mom recently informed me that Cabbage Patch Kids is celebrating their 25th Anniversary. Cabbage Patch Kids is releasing a new line of original cabbage patch dolls, meaning that each new ‘Kid will be an exact reproduction of an original. They’re being created using the original sculpts/molds and the same materials they used in the classics. And they’ll each still come with their own name and certificate of adoption. Team Mom was awesome enough to send me my very own 25th Anniversary Doll. It’s still in the box waiting for Angel Girl to open it on Christmas morning.

Obviously they timed this release to coincide with holiday shopping but I’m certain this re-release would have been a huge success at any time of year. How many of us don’t love our beloved ‘originals’, be they Cabbage Patch Kids or other toys. Sometimes we hate to see toys evolve. I know I’m excited for Angel girl to have her very own Cabbage Patch doll (and a doll that doesn’t do creepy stuff like blink her eyes and pee and poo and talk) and hopefully she’ll play with it a little more…gently, than I did.

My only memory of my cabbage patch doll is of an atrocious butch cut and her dingy unclothed body (who knows where doll clothes every disappear to) flung about on the floor or outside in the yard. Suffice it to say I was Tom boy. My Barbies, all 3 of them, faced the same fate. But I digress.

Were you old enough to remember the Cabbage Patch craze? I was but 2 so I don’t. Do you think A 25th Anniversary doll will be on your holiday shopping list? They are a limited time release. Are there other classic toys you’re hoping will someday return? I’m voting for Rainbow Brite. If I could get me an original Rainbow Brite Doll, some sprites and a DVD of all original episodes I would be a happy camper.

This is awesome! We will be buying one for our three year old this year for Christmas for sure.

I was 6 when I got my Cabbage Patch Kid. Her name was Ginny Ida. That was what her “birth certificate” said, and even though I didn’t really like the name, I never bothered to officially change it through the proper channels. So, I kept on calling her Ginny Ida because I was afraid I’d get in trouble if I called her anything else. I probably played with her until I was 10. I think my parents still have her in a box somewhere, along with all of her clothes and accessories.

Awesome. My Cabbage Patch Kid was named Eliza Edie. She had dark brown hair just like mine, and came with a Reindeer costume (for Christmas!). I loved her. I wasn’t a girly-girl at all, but I must have been just at the right age to appreciate her. My barbies, on the other hand, became the unfortunate victims of toilet paper fashion shows, and then eventually chopped-off legs, butched-off hair, and beheadings. So sad.

I think my kids might appreciate Cabbage Patch dolls. Maybe. I’d have to look at them in-person and decide if their cost would be worth it to me, before I decided to buy one. If I miss the chance, I doubt I’ll lose any sleep over it.

Rainbow Brite stuff coming back would definitely be cool. And you know what else I want? Popples.

I still remember the day I opened my first Cabbage Patch doll. I don’t remember her name but I remember that meaning a lot to me, and I remember making a huge deal about the “certificate of adoption” they all came (come?) with.

I also loved Rainbow Brite! They sure don’t make cartoons like they used to!

I was 8 years old when the craze hit, and my dad wrestled the crowds to get me one.

Consequently, last year, I specially ordered a cabbage patch newborn (good for ‘18 months plus’) for Punkin.

She loves her CPK just as much as I loved mine. I may just have to track down one of those 25th anniversary babies for her.

Oh yes. I wanted one sooooo badly but my parents couldn’t afford one. Especially tough because all of my friends had several! My mom bought me one when they were reintroduced about five years ago, and now Jessamine has two.

I hope these ones have the original 80’s names too, that would rawk!

Lol, I wonder if garbage pail kids will come back too. Did you ever see those? They were apparently making fun of cabbage patch kids, in the same way itchy and scratchy make fun of modern day cartoons. I found Popples when I was in England. I don’t know if they’ve hit here yet, but that was my favorite growing up. I would have bought one for Zoe if I didn’t have to be so careful about what I acquire.

My parents were actually too poor to buy us Cabbage Patch Kids. No, I’m serious! We got the generic knock-off’s: Heavenly Kids. They were very similar to Cabbage Patch kids, and ironically enough, my parents still have them and my kids play with them.

I love that they are bringing back the toys of our youth! I would love to see Rainbow Brite, too. :)

I admit that I had a TON of CPKs. My aunt didn’t have children and she went crazy over them, so she bought me a bunch. But, sadly, I didn’t save any of them. Maybe I’ll have to get one of these!

How well I remember!

They released them up here a few years back so our girls already have theirs, but that’s exciting news for you guys!

My heart just skipped a beat when I read your post! I have a secret obsession with CPK’s. I also could never get one as a kid because the originals were so expensive and hard to get for a while. My mom made a CPK for me…not quite the same. It had yellow yarn hair. A painted on face and was quite flat and squarish in shape. It even had a forged Xavier Roberts signature on the butt in Sharpie marker. She even drew a birth certificate for me with the name of the “real CPK” that I always wanted…Lorraine. When I got it Christmas morning, it somehow just wasn’t the same. Needless to say, if I see a “Lorraine” rereleased, I am going to wrestle whoever gets in my way to get it. Some childhood dreams never die :)

I was in year six when the kids hit Australia. They sold out on the first day and were scarce for months afterwards.
I wanted a baldie one and eventually asked my step grandmother in the States to buy one for me.
Which she did and I still have.
All my girls have one too.
I don’t know how it would go down if I asked for a CPK for Christmas. my husband might think I have lost the plot. LOL
