Unbelievable!
Ok, someone in this apartment complex is living in filth and doesn’t care and is therefore not reporting their pests to management. We’ve not only been suddenly plagued by cockroaches, last night my husband saw….
a MOUSE!
That’s right, he saw a mouse dart across our living room floor. Unluckily for the mouse I’m determined to get him out. And when I’ve determined to do something I’m not easily thwarted. I love animals, but I won’t let them live on the loose in my home.
And what are we suppose to do about this? It is pretty obvious there is a tenant who has brought these problems since we’ve lived here for 6 years and have never had these pests before. I wonder if our management might do an unannounced apartment inspection to find out who the perpetrator is.
So, does anyone know of any humane mouse traps or where I can buy them?

I’ve been reading along for a while now. I just wanted to drop you a comment to say keep up the good work.
Eeek. Good luck with that. My experience is that when there is one mouse, there are more than one mouse hiding out there somewhere.

I don’t know about humane (Dude! It’s a mouse), but the glue traps work really well.
We caught 17 mice the month our oldest was born, but we were living in the first floor apartment of an old Archie Bunker house in The Bronx. Whenever the reservoir levels rose, the mice rushed to our house. Grrross.

Ick! We had an infestation of mice our first winter in this house–because the builder didn’t seal off an area, and which basically turned into a neon sign asking mice to enter the subfloor. Once it was sealed, we haven’t any more problems. But we killed 8 mice. *shudder*
Our mice weren’t tempted by traps that had food on them–I guess they found enough food and water elsewhere. What worked was putting the traps with the fake piece of cheese along the floorboards where they liked to run. They’d get running and SNAP! They came out mostly at night, so we’d put out a ton of traps after the kids went to bed so they wouldn’t set them of and snap off a toe.
Good luck. Hope the landlord can track down who the culprit is.

Oh yuck, once again, I’m sorry. Truly sorry. One of the bigger reasons I was desperate to move from our last apartment was because it had become infested with mice.
Jane’s right. If you’ve seen one, there’s definitely going to be MORE than one. We thought there was just one in our house. We ended up catching at least 5 before we moved, and I know that some of them were evading the traps.
Glue traps worked best for us. But they’re probably the least humane. I always felt terrible when finding one stuck to a trap. I really do think mice are so cute. I just don’t want them running loose! Anyway, once I would discover a trapped one, I would stick the whole thing in a zip-lock back and smash it to kill it quickly. Which was not fun for either of us, I’m sure.
The cheap snap-traps rarely worked. The mice either just avoided them (too smart, ugh!!), or got caught on the hips, making for a slow, miserable death if we didn’t know about it right away.
As we moved out, we found a few holes in the drywall where they had chewed their way into our house through the common walls. Gee, what fun.
I hope you can get rid of this problem quickly. And that your management deals with it better than ours did.

OK, I am totally with you - get that thing outta your house!!! QUICKLY!!! =)
My husband swears by those sticky traps (that Jane mentioned above), but don’t be any where near them if a mouse gets stuck. They will squeak and whimper because they can’t get away and it is the saddest thing ever!!
Then you have to pick it up and dispose of the thing afterwards. Yeah, that was my HUSBAND’s job!! I would almost rather go w/ those old fashioned snap traps - at least then, they die right away.
Don’t lay out poison… Nothing is worse than one rotting on the inside of your walls! You will smell it for days.
OK, I’m no help, am I? LOL

Yeurgh!
That is definitely a problem to toss into management’s lap!

We had all kinds of mice in our old apartment. Of course, we were on the 1st floor/basement (I think they called it the “garden level”). It seemed to get worse when the weather turned cold. I think they have catch and release traps at Home Depot.
Yikes! I’m with Kimberly - toss that problem to management!

I hate to admit this in public, but every year when it starts to turn cold outside we get spiders, cockroaches, mice and even RATS! Yes, you read that right, rats. It makes my skin crawl! We live right next to the greenbelt and rats are everywhere in this town.
I freak out over anything creepy crawly in my house so it’s my husband’s job to get rid of them. We are usually able to get rid of them pretty quickly, but we have one right now that it refusing to be caught. We have 4 different types of traps set around where we’ve seen evidence and we can still hear him rustling around.
The glue traps work the best, but then my husband has to take them out and smash them so they don’t suffer being stuck to those things, so not a very pleasant way.
I hope you have better luck with getting rid of yours than we are having with ours.

I do think this is something your management should be taking care of and they for sure need to know about the problem so that they can figure it out. You have a contract with them to live in a place where you can expect to have a healthy environment for your family.
We had a mouse in an apartment where we lived. There was only one. How do I know? Mouse traps…only caught one…caught it within 1 hr. of placing the trap. Our management used the good old mouse traps. They are quick…the mouse doesn’t see it coming, etc. And the used peanut butter to bait the trap. No mouse dared to enter our apartment again!!!

Good luck getting rid of the mouse!
We’ve been inundated with HUGE cockroaches recently, and I blamed my mom (jokingly) since she arrived here fairly recently. But I’ve discovered that they did a mosquito spray in the area, so all the bugs are running for safety, and obviously our house looks like a safe haven. It helps that the cockroaches are half-poisoned and easy to kill, but it’s still gross!

That happened to us once in an apartment we got when we first got married. the management was so mad at the people who brought the yucky bugs, they kicked them out and got right on top of cleaning our place out for us. I hope you have the same luck.
I also wanted to let you know that I had to go private for a little while and I hope you will email em so I can get you invited back into my readers.

*Spew* I’m sorry, I hate house pests.I’m thinking about going nuclear if I can’t get rid of the sugar ants that think they own our apartment. But, mice and cockroaches are MUCH grosser.
