Sharpen the Mind, Shape the Body

So how many of you have made New Years Resolutions?

How many of you have made New Years Resolutions involving weight loss?

Remember this one I made last year? A whole year gone by and I’m still 3 pounds away from my goal. Three measly pounds! So of course I’m still working toward it. I didn’t actually start losing weight until June after I had weaned the baby so I suppose I could say I’ve dropped 12 pounds in 6 months. I don’t know whether that’s fast or not but I’m happy. I’m fitter than I’ve ever been even if I’m not as skinny, and I feel healthy which is most important.

I enjoy working out but I get bored easily by the same old routine so I like to switch it up and back and forth. I’ve been thinking about getting a Wii fit. Have any of you tried it and if so, what do you think of it?

I learned recently through Mom Central that Game Stop has started off 2009 with their own public health boosting initiative, “Sharpen the Mind, Shape the Body”. During the entire month of January you can stop by any Game Stop store and discover the increasingly popular world of active gaming by demoing select titles for yourself. Game Stop offers a variety of games that can either boost brain power, make exercise fun or both. As a special incentive, all shoppers who spend $35 or more on designated products will receive a free 12-month trial subscription to their choice of Cosmopolitan, Marie Claire, Redbook, Good Housekeeping or Esquire.

I don’t know if I’ll buy anything for sure but I’m definitely going to stop by and see what products they have for the Wii. Have you tried any fitness oriented games that you’re hooked on and would recommend?

I highly recommend Wii Fit. It’s fun and you unlock new games as you get better. We really love it here (especially the fact that you can password protect your personal info).

I’ve heard the wii fit is wonderful but I have to say that just short of the three pounds is still very good–maybe I’m an optimist :)

I still haven’t checked out Wii Fit yet but it seems like a great fitness game. I’m amazed at the variety of games they have for adults now.

We have the Wii fit. My mom LOVES it. I think it’s boring and it doesn’t give me a good work out. I think it depends on what kind of work out you’re used to. My mom likes it because she went from nothing to the Wii fit. I went from lacrosse practice (2+ hours of almost non stop running) to the Wii fit. Fun for her. Not much of a workout for me.

I really love the way that you wrote this post. I often get “bored” reading Mom Central blog tour posts because there are quite a few bloggers that just post the information given to them instead of including a “personal touch.” I love that you took the information and turned the announcement into something worthwhile…

I tried Wii Fit at BlogHer ‘08 and thought it was fun. I also love Dance, Dance Revolution. It’s a great workout - and super fun too - especially if you have two mats and can compete against someone. :)

All that said, my favorite workout is still running. It’s free, simple, effective, and I can bring my baby with me!

Sounds like you’re in a good place already! I love my Wii fit, but am enjoying Dance Dance Revolution nearly as much. Fun and hard all at once.

I just got Wii fit last week and love it. It’s great to have a fitness routine that’s fun and it challenges me to try new things, or do more reps. So it keeps me from being lazy about it.

I have the Wii fit and I do enjoy it. The games are a lot of fun but not what I’d consider a workout.

The yoga and strength training aspects though can be very helpful, as long as you use them in addition to some form of aerobic exercise. It’s a lot like doing a workout DVD, only with feedback from the balance board.

I recommend it!

I’ve made fitness resolutions as well: to run a race this year (5K) and be able to do 30 pushups (shoot for the stars right?). I’m hoping to gain a few pounds too— opposite of most people’s weight related goals, but that’s the direction I need to go.
