Someone to laugh and fake cry with

She was feeling somewhat lonely that night. It wasn’t that she was actually alone. Yes, the kids were all in bed but her husband was there with her. He sat reclining in the easy chair watching TV. She kept glancing at his face from her seat on the couch, hoping he would look her way. But he was absorbed so she knew she had to make the first move.

She walked back to the bedroom and pulled out a pair of teal pajama pants with monkeys all over them and pulled them on. Then scrounging through her drawer she found the matching top. Over that she wore a cozy hoodie and on her feet she placed some fuzzy socks. Then she grabbed a large blanket and made her way out to the couch where she settled back down and waited.

It seemed to take a while but he finally got up for a pee break and as he emerged from the bathroom she casually said, “Don’t you want to come cuddle with me? There’s plenty of room if we move the pillows.”

“Well I’m really comfortable on the recliner right now, maybe in a little bit,” he replied.

An exaggerated frown formed on her face. He sat down in his chair looking at her with half a smirk.

She sniffed and batted her lashes and in her most pathetic voice said, “Pwetty pwease?”

He chuckled slightly so she continued. “Look I even got all snuggleable just so you would want to spoon with me. She whipped back the blanket to reveal her 5 year old monkey pajamas in all their faded glory. His show was back on, he was getting distracted again.

“Maybe after this show is over,” he said.

She began to make crying noises. Just little ones but as he sighed she continued growing louder. She covered her face with her arm. She realized he wasn’t going to budge and was ready to stop the act when he said smugly, “You’re not gonna trick me.”

The words only egged her on. She kept fake crying just to see how long she could do it. She was feeling she would burst into laughter at any moment. Then her husband lightly tossed his empty diet coke can in her direction. It hit the pillow above her head and splashed little droplets of liquid onto her cheek.

She began to fake sob now, her body convulsing slightly as she did so. She was amazed at how realistic she sounded. She heard her husband stand up and approach. He reached out to her cheek and felt it for tears since he couldn’t see in the dim light of the TV.

“Oh honey,” he said, “You’re not suppose to have really been crying,” and he crawled onto the couch to comfort her. She couldn’t contain it any longer.

“Ha! I won! I’m not crying you twerp,” she said with a maniacal cackle in her voice.

He looked perplexed, “But there were tears…”

“No, there was diet coke you splashed on me when you threw your can at me!”

“Why you little…” he started and then he began to poke and tickle her. Then he got up off the couch and exclaimed, “You don’t get any cuddles for tricking me!”

“Hey, you tricked yourself when you threw your coke can at me you goofball!”

He humphed and made great emphasis in sitting back down and ignoring her. But when his TV show was over he stood up and joined her on the couch. And she was a very good wife and said nothing at all. Though she may have been unable to stop smiling.

I love it! Both the humour of how you told it, and the comfort that comes after years of marriage. Being able to pull off those sorts of stunts with no fear of anything but teasing for reprisal. =)
