Dear Sassypants…

…You nearly gave your mother a heart attack tonight. You were off playing in the bedroom and were quiet for a bit so I decided to check on you. As I walked into the hallway I saw the bathroom light on and the door open. It shouldn’t have been open but evidently one of your brothers forgot to close it. I saw your chubby little toes peeking out and smiled as I pushed the door fully open.

Then I gaped in horror as I saw blood dripping from your finger tips and smeared on your legs. I scooped you up ready to call 911 when a familiar pungent smell hit my nose and I suddenly noticed the bottle of bright red nail polish lying spilled on the ground around where you had been sitting. I smelled your fingers and breathed a huge, heaving sigh of relief.

As I doused a rag in nail polish remover and wiped you down I thanked my lucky stars you were okay. And then as I washed you off with soap and water after that I wondered how in the heck you ever figured out how to unscrew the lid of a nail polish bottle in the first place. And why in the world you fixed your eye upon bright gleaming red as opposed to the other twenty three bottles of non-blood looking colors in the cupboard.

I suppose I’ll never know.

Oh my goodness! That is so scary! My heart skipped a beat when I was reading your story and I sighed in relief when I read the part about the nail polish. I bet it took a few minutes for you to “recover” from that incident…phew!

So scary!

And it is so hard sometimes not to wonder if certain of their seemingly “innocent” actions aren’t actually intentional!

Hey, my 16 month old can screw off lids now. I’m sure these things are adult proof, not child proof. :)

As for red? But mommy, it’s such a PRETTY color!
